Location
Why Victor Harbor?
The u normally found in Australian English for the word harbor is missing here – and, for others such as Adelaide Outer Harbor as well – because it is understood the State Government used American shipping charts in the late 19th and early 20th century.
In 1837, two whaling stations established at Rosetta Head and the point opposite Granite Island. Whale oil from Victor Harbor subsequently became South Australia’s first export.
The township began in 1963, named after the HMS Victor, the ship sailed by Captain R Crozier who had surveyed the bay.
Today Victor Harbor is the largest population centre on the Fleurieu Peninsula with an economy based upon agriculture, fishing and various industries.
Community
McLaren Vale is a wine lovers’ favourite. About 45 minutes north is the State’s famous McLaren Vale wine region, famous for its fine restaurants and Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Tourist Attractions
Victor Harbor itself has many tourist attractions including good food and wine establishments.
But perhaps the most famous of its drawcards is the horse-drawn tram that links the downtown visitor centre with nearby Granite Island.
Transport
Just over an hour’s drive south of Adelaide, a short drive from Cape Jervis and the ferry to Kangaroo Island.
Shopping
Every type of business, service and retail outlet is available with numerous competitors in each category to provide a wide choice.
Ocean Street, the main thoroughfare, offers gifts, souvenirs, clothing, food, recreation and holiday needs.
Victor Central, off Torrens Road, is an indoor shopping mall with a supermarket, chain stores and a large selection of speciality shops. There are also shopping centres along Torrens Road and Victoria Parade, as well as smaller groups of shops dotted around the city.
